Banksy's manager, Steve Lazarides, is known for his eye for subversive,
intelligent, unsettling, attention grabbing artists. He has now gathered
together the best of them to create a collection of Outsider art: From Tank
Girl and Gorrilaz creator Jamie Hewlett to international artist collective
Faile, Conor Harrington, or 3D from Massive Attack.
Steve Lazarides named his compilation Outsiders because a considerable
proportion of the artists included choose to display their work in the very
public domain of the street [ or actually, in several cases, the
countryside ]. But equally they’re Outsiders because they have made their
name without taking the traditional path via the established gallery system,
many even haven’t ever had any formal art training. Their chosen medium ist
the outside world, money may be fun, but these artists aren’t producing
their work just so a millionaire can put it up in his Swiss Chalet - they
do it to communicate their message.
This new generation of boundary-pushing artists’ greatest claim to the tag
of Outsiders is, that while they’ve regularly been accused of „not being
art“, they’ve lately ended up gracing museums and major art galleries.
